Crystal & Stone is a unique collection of four lanterns, where the rawness of aged stone meets the delicacy and extraordinary brilliance of crystal. Structures, three-dimensional ornaments, subtle aging, and shimmering particles give each lantern a stunning detail, taking on a completely new character when lit.
In one online workshop, I’ll show you how to make a lantern base and then use it to create up to 4 different versions of the design, each 23.5 cm high. You’ll see how to completely change the character of the same form using different techniques, details, and finishes.
The lanterns are made primarily from inexpensive glass cylinders and terracotta bases. I’ll show you how to properly prepare these surfaces, select appropriate preparations, and combine various materials into a cohesive decorative whole.
The heart of the collection is the juxtaposition of two contrasting effects – the imitation of old, raw stone and a transparent, crystal surface. Light penetrating the glass and reflecting off the particles causes the lanterns to shimmer beautifully when lit.
4 LANTERNS IN ONE ONLINE WORKSHOP
Using the same base, we’ll create four completely different versions of the Crystal & Stone lantern:
Mirror – the shiniest version, with a crushed, aged mirror effect enclosed in a decorative frame.
Nostalgia – a version using the decoupage technique, with a Christmas tree reminiscent of an illustration from an old Christmas postcard.
Ornament – a rich, three-dimensional composition with decorative ornaments and trees, full of texture and aging.
Forest Silence – a delicate, winter version with a deer surrounded by Christmas trees, maintained in a peaceful, slightly fairytale atmosphere.
Thanks to this, you’ll see how one base can become the starting point for four different decorations, and the skills you’ll gain will open up even more possibilities for creating your own versions.
You can use these lanterns with both a real tea light candle and a battery-powered candle.
The crystal structure interacts beautifully with light, creating reflections and a subtle glow. This makes an eye-catching decoration for a table, fireplace, or dresser, but also a beautiful idea for a handmade gift.
